Let It Be…again

Let It Be…again
The extensive and informative new box set of the Let It Be - 50th Anniversary Edition impresses with revised songs, studio outtakes and an unreleased original mix. The box set sheds new light on the Fab Four and clears up some myths.

It’s well known that Let It Be was the last official studio album that was released in 1970, but that the songs were written before the previous album Abbey Road was recorded in the summer of 1969. The raw recordings of the sessions, which have since been controversially discussed among fans, were handed over to the American producer "Phil" Spector in an effort to salvage the abandoned project. Famous for his hits in the late 1950s and 1960s, he also produced albums of Ike & Tina Turner, George Harrison, John Lennon, and the Ramones. Spector was famous for his lavish "Wall of Sound" production technique, which was added to some of the Let It Be songs. Paul McCartney, who was dissatisfied with the Spector production, had the album cleared of its opulence and released an alternative version Let It Be… Naked in 2003.

For the Let It Be - 50th Anniversary Edition, Giles Martin, son of the late Beatles producer George Martin, took on the task of finding a balance between the two productions. Martin has remixed four Beatles albums in recent years (e.g. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and Abbey Road) and is now the longest active Beatles producer, outdoing his famous father.

Martin's version is of Let It Be - 50th Anniversary Edition should delight fans worldwide and is now available in Germany. Together with sound engineer Sam Okell, Martin mixed the album in stereo, 5.1 Surround DTS and Dolby Atmos. Also included are unreleased versions and jams from the Get Back sessions, as well as two different versions of the Let It Be documentary from 1970 (the original documentary directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg and a new, six hour, recut version directed by Peter Jackson).

Personally, I'm looking forward to the revised version, even though I have always enjoyed listening to the original album.
