The terror-ble five!
The terror-ble five!
What could be better at Halloween than watching some horror flicks in a cozy environment, dressed appropriately and ready to scare the hell out of ourselves! Here is a small selection of some of the best, spine chilling classics:
The Shining (USA 1980)
Director Stanley Kubrick refines the horror in the Overlook Hotel in an ingenious way: the camera, soundtrack, setting and cast are simply perfect and produce images that have sustained their spine chilling terror to this day. Admittedly, Stephen King, who published the novel in 1977, was no fan of the film adaptation, but that does not detract from the quality of the film.
The Unforgettable moment:
Caretaker Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) goes on a family hunt with an axe.
Best quote:
"Here's Johnny!"
Friday the 13th (USA 1980)
Little Jason Voorhees drowns at Crystal Lake Summer Camp in 1957. A year later, two teenagers are murdered there and the camp is closed. Fast forward to 1980: on Friday, June 13th (Jason's birthday), the camp reopens and the killing begins again. Upon release it was viewed as trash and put on the index. The film though was a success and resulted in numerous sequels. Jason, the legendary (and undead) killer of the series, doesn’t even appear in the original.
Unforgettable moment:
In a dream sequence, Jason emerges from the water and pulls his victim into the depths.
Best quote:
"You know, Jason was my son and today was his birthday."
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Director legend Wes Craven creates the clawed cult killer in a striped shirt called Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), who torments teenagers in their dreams. Their lives end fatally, when their nightmares turn into reality. Cinema debutant Johnny Depp is one of Freddy’s victims in the original movie. In 2003 the film series A Nightmare On Elm Street and Friday the 13th crossed over with the fim Freddy vs. Jason. In it the two serial killers get caught up in a deadly duel.
Unforgettable moment:
Nancy takes a bath.
Best quote:
"Do what you want. No matter what. Under no circumstances should you go back to sleep. "
Halloween (USA 1978)
Friday the 13th and Halloween are the blue prints for the wave of slasher films tat followed in the 1980s and 1990s.
Scream Queen Jamie Lee Curtis, knife wielding Michael Myers, brilliant director and score composer John Carpenter make this film a timeless horror classic, which spawned some extremely successful sequels.
Unforgettable moment:
Laurie (Jamie Lee Curtis) screams her soul out.
Best quote:
"He came home."
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (USA 1974)
When the shocker hit cinemas in 1974, it was not yet clear that it this film would shape an entire genre for decades: Leatherface, who wears a mask made of human skin and prefers to swing a chainsaw, is a role model and icon for countless serial killers. The story line of a group of young people who end up in the wrong place at the wrong time originated from the original script and has become the standard recipe for slasher movies.
Unforgettable moment:
At the end of the film, Leatherface wields his chainsaw aimlessly as the sun rises.
Best quote:
"Now it looks like the house where Bela Lugosi was born."
